Sångarporträtt: Martin Martinsson, Orust
This album is included in the series Sångarporträtt (Singer Portraits) with traditional Swedish folk music recordings from Svenskt visarkiv (Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research), and contains more than 40 different songs and wordless tunes (diddling).
Martin Martinsson is one of the singers who left the largest number songs found in Svenskt visarkiv – songs that he mostly sang directly from memory. There are long narrative ballads, short “stubs” or fragments that one sang for children, herding songs, sea shanties, satirical songs, but even more literary songs such as Tegnér’s Fritiof’s Saga and Carl Michael Bellman’s most famous creations.
The compilation of the recorded material presented here primarily reflects a repertoire linked to Martinsson himself, and to his family. But at the same time, we meet a local music environment, what was sung and played on the island of Orust before radio, gramophone, and television took over as entertainment.
