Sångarporträtt: Dansar Edvard Jonsson, Malung

The music of Dansar Edvard Jonsson from Malung (1893-1976), one of the most important representatives among older folk ballad singers, is now finally available as a whole entity. His distinctive vocal style and deep insight into songs have inspired many singers and helped to create contemporary style.

A few songs and herding calls with Dansar Edvard appear on several previous releases, but here, for the first time, is a compilation devoted entirely to him, and that reflects his entire recorded song repertoire. The album is number two in the Svenskt visarkiv (Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research) series Singer Portraits with traditional Swedish folk music recordings. It features previously unreleased recordings from other archives, and from private individuals.

Dansar Edvard sang many kinds of songs: old songs from the herding environment as well as popular songs from the early 1900s, and several long, narrative ballads – but also short fragments which he wove into his storytelling. He was also able to do herding calls, and was happiest up on the mountain pasture. On several tracks, he talks about himself and about the songs.
