Zilliacus Persson Raitinen

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Divertimento

After more than half a decade, the Grammis (Swedish Grammy) Award-winning string trio ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen is back with a new album on Caprice Records. In 2004, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, transcribed by Dmitry Sitkovetsky (CAP 21695), was on the menu (the record won a Grammis in 2005). This time they have taken on Mozart’s magnificent Divertimento for String Trio in E-Flat Major (K 563), a piece in six movements, for the extremely demanding instrumentation of violin, viola and cello.

The trio also performs a string trio movement in G-major; a movement that Mozart never finished, believed to be a preliminary sketch for the famous Divertimento. On the album, the trio performs a version that was finished by the German musicologist Franz Beyer (K Anh 66/K 562e) – traditionally a piece that is often performed in connection to the Divertimento.

The string trio ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen was formed in 1999, when Cecilia Zilliacus, violin, Johanna Persson viola, and Kati Raitinen, cello, found each other at a concert at the Lapland Music Festival and decided to continue playing together. Since then, they have developed into one of Sweden’s most interesting chamber music ensembles.

The members are often heard at chamber music festivals, where they perform as a trio, but also in different constellations with other prominent musicians. The ensemble is always trying to expand the repertoire for string trio. For instance, they co-operate with different composers. As a result, the ensemble has had the opportunity to perform specially written works, by such composers as Sven-David Sandström, Tebogo Monnakgotla, Fredrik Hedelin and Fredrik Österling.

Goldberg Variations. The programme was released on DVD by Caprice Records in the autumn of 2006 (CAP 21772), and in the spring of 2007 an album with Hermann Berens’ three string trios was released on Intim Musik.

The members of the trio are also well established musicians individually: Cecilia Zilliacus won the Soloist Prize in 1997 and is one of Sweden’s most sought-after soloists on her instrument. She works as a soloist and chamber musician all over the world. Johanna Persson is a section leader in the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra. She is also member of the contemporary art music ensemble Gageego! and has appeared as a soloist on several albums. Kati Raitinen is co-principal cellist in the Royal Opera Orchestra. She also works as a chamber musician in several groups in Sweden and abroad.
