Dag Wirén/Serenade for Strings/Cello Concerto etc.

Mats Widlund &  Mats Rondin, Svenska kammarorkestern, Petri Sakari

When this music was released in 1996 it was a world CD première for three of the four Wirén compositions presented. The Cello Concerto, the Piano Concerto and the Divertimento had never before been recorded. By contrast, there are several recordings of the fourth item, Serenade for Strings (1937), which is probably one of the most frequently played and broadcast Swedish pieces the world over, a humoresque in four movements.

The Cello Concerto, written in 1936, is dedicated to the cellist Gustav Gröndahl, who encouraged a number of Wirén’s compositions.

The Divertimento, from 1957, is a product of Wirén’s maturity: four close-knit meditations.

The Piano Concerto was written between 1947 and 1950. It was premièred in 1951 by Greta Erikson and the Swedish Radio Orchestra, conducted by Sten Frykberg.

The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, founded in the spring of 1995, was formerly known as the Örebro Chamber Orchestra.
