Ensemble Son

To Hear with the Mouth

The ensemble with Sweden’s most adventurous chamber musicians? It was formed in 1994 by four dynamic individualists, who are also brilliant musicians and innovators in the field of contemporary chamber music. The name of ensemble,  ”SON” originates from the fact that all of the names of the musicians end with ”son”: saxophonist Jörgen Pettersson, guitarist Magnus Andersson, percussionist Jonny Axelsson, and composer and trombonist Ivo Nilsson.

Also heard on the new record (a SACD-Hybrid production) as guests of the ensemble are Barry Guy, composer and double bass player, Sven Åberg, lutenist, and Sarah Lindloff, who plalys the flute.

The music, which was recorded during a live concert, was composed by Richard Barrett, Barry Guy and Roger Doyle. For many people Barrett’s name is synonymous with a highly structured complex and exquisitely noted music that only the most competent and devoted musicians are able to execute. But he has also developed (especially in the FURT Ensemble) a passion for incorporating formally strict compositional structures into the sound world of free improvisation.
