The Golovin Music
Johan Helmich Roman
Johan Helmich Roman (1694–1758) composed his famous Drottningholm Music for a royal wedding in 1744, when he was about 50 years old. In his youth he had written a similar orchestral suit containing twice as many movements, known as the Golovin Music.
The Golovin Music is a generous bouquet of orchestral pieces, full of charm and youthful freshness and for the most part fairly short. This music was put together in 1728 for festivities arranged by the Russian Ambassador Golovin in Stockholm to mark the coronation in St. Petersburg of the 12-year old Tsar Peter II.

Altogether the Golovin Music includes 45 numbers and 24 of them have been selected for this recording by the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble. The musicians play on authentic instruments. The recording was made in the building where the music was originally performed, now the home of the Swedish Masonic Order at Blasieholmen in Stockholm.
