The Swedish Piano is the third part of Caprice Records’ series of large digital compilations with the aim of highlighting the diversity and richness of Swedish art music throughout the history. Here, evidently, the piano is in focus, and the vast amount of music written for this “king” of musical instruments by Swedish composers.

This collection takes us on a journey through the music of a comprehensive selection of Swedish composers, from the classical era’s Joseph Martin Kraus and the romantic Franz Berwald to the impressionist Gösta Nystroem and modernist Ingvar Lidholm.

For a very long time, the piano has enjoyed a very special place in the heart of Swedish culture. During the 19th century it became – and continued to be well into the 20th century – a presence in nearly every home, like natural part of the furnishing and a focal point in many living rooms. It became an invaluable resource in the cultivation of private musical practice, which is highly reflective of the many fine piano makers that have operated in Sweden for a long time. Of course, the piano’s high status also had a large effect on the art music written for it.

On these recordings you can hear, among others, the eminent pianists Lucia Negro, Hans Pålsson, and Love Derwinger, conductors Stig Westerberg, Göran W Nilson, and Janos Fürst, samt Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
