Dag Wirén

Violin Concerto op. 23, Triptych, Wind Quintet, String Quartet No. 5

The Violin Concerto op. 23 from 1946 is one of Dag Wirén’s most beloved compostitions. On this recording Nils-Erik Sparf plays the solo violin.

Dag Wirén, who came from the same generation as the somewhat younger Gunnar de Frumerie, left behind a relatively small but valuable production. One of his most appreciated works for the orchestra is the violin concerto from 1946, here recorded with Nils-Eric Sparf and The Stockholm Philharmonic conducted by Sergiu Comissiona.

A composition characteristic for the 1950-ies is Triptych for chamber orchestra, played by the Stockholm Sinfonietta led by Jan-Olav Wedin. Very characteristic for the composer is also the Wind Quintet from 1971 played by The Stockholm Wind Quintet and the String Quartet No. 5 from 1970 played by the Saulesco Quartet.
