As a complement to Stefan Wistrand‘s book on the subject, Caprice Records releases a digital compilation album comprised of 15 tracks of unique material with tenor saxophonist and composer Börje Fredriksson (1937-1968) from Eskilstuna. Stefan Wistrand is a musician and researcher, mostly in the fields of jazz and improvisational music, since the mid 1970’s. His book on Börje Fredriksson is printed in Swedish.

Börje Fredriksson belongs to some of the most talented and personal jazz musicians who appeared in Sweden in the early 1960s, of the same generation as Bernt Rosengren and Eje Thelin. As for many back then, the primary source of inspiration were the 1950s hard-bop, the modal jazz with greats such as John Coltrane and Miles Davis. However, Fredriksson carefully cultivated his own style early on, both as an instrumentalist and not least as a composer. Unlike before, when American standard songs dominated, in the 1960s, it became increasingly common that Swedish jazz musicians played their own material, and Fredriksson’s compositions belong among the more original ones of the time.

During his short life, mainly with Stockholm as his base, he played with several significant jazz musicians, among others a then young Bobo Stenson.

Fredriksson is part of a Swedish jazz tradition, the development and depth of which he strongly contributed, in his own uncompromising way. His music is still being played and is constantly being discovered by new generations of musicians and listeners.
