Wilhelm Stenhammar

String Quartets Nos 3 & 4

Chamber music forms an important part of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s output. Above all his six String Quartets are crucial – the first, a youthful work from the mid-1890’s; the last, written a little more than two decades later.

Almost every phase of Stenhammar’s development as a composer is reflected in his quartets. Al are among his very finest works, which also places them among the greatest Swedish music. The quartets are issued on separate CDs – Nos. 1 & 2 (CAP 21337), Nos. 3 & 4 (CAP 21338) and Nos. 5 & 6 (CAP 21339).

The Gotland Quartet; Mats Zetterqvist & June Gustafson, violin, Karin Ahnlund, viola and Ewa Forsberg, cello.
