Wilhelm Stenhammar

String Quartets Nos 1 & 2

Chamber music forms an important part of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s output. Above all his six String Quartets are crucial – the first, a youthful work from the mid-1890’s; the last, written a little more than two decades later.

Almost every phase of Stenhammar’s development as a composer is reflected in his quartets. All of them are among his very finest works, which also places them among the greatest Swedish music. The quartets are issued on separate CDs – Nos. 1 & 2 (CAP 21337), Nos. 3 & 4 (CAP 21338) and Nos. 5 & 6 (CAP 21339).

The Fresk Quartet; Lars Fresk & Hans-Erik Westberg, violin, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, viola and Per-Göran Skytt, cello.

The Copenhagen String Quartet; Tutter Givskov & Mogens Durholm, violin, Mogens Brunholm, viola and Asger Lund Christiansen, cello.
