The Virtuoso Tuba

Mikael Lind

The tuba as a solo instrument – can such a thing be?! Absolutely, with Michael Lind as soloist! He has done more than anyone else to raise the tuba to a position of eminence. Compositions have been expressly written for him, for example by O. Schmidt, N.V. Bentzon, J. Jacobsen, E. von Koch, W. Hartley and, on this CD, Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist and Bo Nilsson.

Three more composers are represented on this CD: Julius Jacobsen, with “Tuba buffo”, Christer Danielsson, with “Capriccio da camera”, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, with his classic Tuba Concerto.

Michael Lind has been active in Sweden since 1975, when he joined the Stockholm Philharmonic. As a member of its brass section until 1987, he also had the chance of playing in more of a chamber music idiom. Vigorously and in many different ways, he has earned a place for the tuba in the musical sunshine. Michael Lind also teaches at the Royal College of Music.
