The seventh instalment in Caprice Records’ series on Swedish art music is completely devoted to the guitar. The Swedish Guitar displays the enormous variety of styles and expressions in Swedish guitar music, and the many virtuoso artists who perform it. Some additions of the more traditional song and jazz kind have also gotten a spot on the list, as genre boundaries have always been more fluent for the guitar, perhaps more so than for most other instruments.


Classical guitar playing on a high level was something that came late to Sweden, and it wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century that a few pioneers, like Gunnar Lif and Per-Olof Johnson began the painstaking work of raising it to a high international level. After that, things progressed quickly however, and Sweden now has several internationally acclaimed artists on the instrument. This has also spurred many composers of the nation to write music for guitar, with guitar concertos by, among others, Erland von Koch and Sven-David Sandström, as well as solo works by Dag Wirén, Jan Carlstedt, and Hilding Hallnäs, to mention a few.

On these recordings you can hear, apart from the above mentioned Per-Olof Johnson and Gunnar Lif, several others of Sweden’s foremost guitarists, like Mats Bergström, Göran Söllscher, and Per Skareng.
