Swedish Cello Sonatas

Mats Lindström & Bengt Forsberg

Cellist Mats Lidström and pianist Bengt Forsberg have been friends for many years, ever since they were students at the Göteborg University College of Music. This is their third CD  with Swedish cello sonatas.

Lidström and Forsberg are both convinced that there is a lot of very fine music for the cello which is never performed, mainly because of the lack of sheet music. The duo has browsed in archives, and stumbled across a number of hitherto unknown pieces. Included in this recording are works by Johan Helmich Roman, Franz Berwald, Hilding Rosenberg, Henning Mankell, Melcher Melchers and Mats Lidström himself.

After graduating from the Göteborg University College of Music, Mats Lidström studied at the Juilliard School in New York. He has been solo cellist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, with the Royal Stockholm Opera and, for five years, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Mats lives in London and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music.

Bengt Forsberg took his soloist’s diploma in 1978. Since then he has studied with Herman D. Koppel in Copenhagen and Peter Feuchtwanger in London. He has performed together with most of the Swedish orchestras, but is known above all as a chamber musician. He gives regular performances worldwide together with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter.
