Scandinavian wood
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
Caprice Records, acting in association with NOMUS (the Nordic Music Committee), issued cd recordings of the recipents of the annual Nordic Council Music Prize, which is alternately awarded for a composition or to a performer. This is the 1991 prizewinner, Danish bass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and the recording entitled Scandinavian Wood.
His first instrument, which he tried for six years, was the piano, but later he turned to the double bass. As a very young man, he was already in European demand. He played regularly at Montmarte in Copenhagen, with such great names as Dexter Gordon and other guest soloists. During the 1960’s Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen was to be heard at the big jazz festivals all over the world, playing both with the Sonny Rollins Trio and with Bill Evans. In the 1970’s he began collaborating with pianist Oscar Peterson. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen has also worked with groups of his own through the years. He has always remained true to his Nordic background.
The new cd begins with Ole Kock Hansen’s Lille Suite for stygere og solo-bas, played by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, who were the 1993 prizewinners (and whose widely-noticed cd was released under the Caprice label in the summer of 1994). The Lille Suite was recorded in the orchestra’s home town of Kaustinen, Finland. The other tracks were recorded in Denmark, the last one , Old Folks/To a Brother, in association with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
