Scandinavian Cello

Petja Svensson & Bengt-Åke Lundin

From the very start there’s no mistaking what it’s all about: this is chamber music with attack and precision. On this CD the cellist Petja Svensson, gives her personal impression of Edvard Grieg’s Sonata Op. 36.

With the same intrepid approach as in Joonas Kokkonen’s Sonata from 1976 later in the program, she takes up the challenge presented by this music for cello and piano.

In Ingvar Lidholm’s Fantasia Sopra Laudi Petja Svensson’s lone cello fills the whole room. She dares to give the music the time it needs, to make the most of the quiet moments, and then develop the composer’s ideas with bold energy, another quality which makes listening to this CD an exciting adventure from start to finish.

Bengt-Åke Lundin, like the generous and skillful pianist he is, backs her up with his solid piano-playing on his Steinway grand piano. In Emil Sjögren’s Sonata Op. 58 this happy partnership brings freshness and clarity to the music. Petja and Beng-Åke use the tempi and phrasing to color the composer’s vision with their own personalities, while still remaining faithful to the fundamental concept of the work.
