Knis Karl

During a large part of the twentieth century, Knis Karl (1913–1980) was a leading proponent of folk music in both Leksand and the region of Dalarna, as well as in the whole of Sweden. He was involved in the organizing of Sweden’s folk Music movement, acting for many years as chairman of both Dalarnas Spelmansförbund (Dalarna’s Fiddler’s Association), and Sveriges Spelmäns Riksförbund (Sweden’s National Association of Fiddlers). In addition, he played an important role in increasing the visibility of folk music in the media.

He maintained a large and interesting repertoire of songs and tunes, and it was primarily as a singer and a musician that he was recorded by the Svenskt visarkiv (the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research). From this extensive material, Svenskt visarkiv’s previous director, musicologist Märta Ramsten, has picked out thirty-nine selections, which were released by Caprice Records on CD, as a supplement to the book, Knis Karl, published by Dalarna’s Museum in 2013.
