Ensemble Villancico

Following their successful cd, A la Xácara! The jungle book of the baroque, Ensemble Villancico returns with a new, rich selection of music from the colonial Latin America. A journey in time and space, from Mexico in the north to Uruguay in the south – from 1590 to 1802. On the cd, you will find a newly discovered piece, Ymaynalla canqui tayta, in the Indian language, Quechua; festiva Afro-inspired Christmas music; beautiful Mexican vocal polyphony; and an excerpt from Latin America’s first opera. The music derives from the cathedral archives, Jesuit missionary stations and partly from secular sources.

Ensemble Villancico was formed in 1995 for the purpose of performing and spreading the Renaissance music collection, Cancionero de Upsala, and is led by Peter Pontvik. the ensemble has given some 150 concerts in more than 20 countries – among others in Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Baltic States and South America – and has made appearences on television and radio. In october 2001, the ensemble was awarded the “Ivan Lukacic-prize” at the Baroque Festival in Varazdin in Croatia.

Ensemble Villancico performs mainly Latin American Baroque repertoire and is the only ensemble in Scandinavia to do so. The cd’s they have previously released are: “A la Xácara! the jungle book of the baroque”, “Cancionero de Upsala”, and the cd-single “Music from a pack of cards” with music by Claudin de Sermisy.
