Hilding Rosenberg/The Revelation of St John
Håkan Hagegård/The Gotheburg Symphony Orchestra/ Conductor; Sixten Ehrling
Hilding Rosenberg’s 4th symphony is a monumental choral symphony, based on the visions of doom in the book of Revelation and on Hjalmar Gullberg’s then newly written poems.
It came at an apocalyptic time during the first years of the Second World War, a burning protest against the violence engulfing the world. It concludes, however, with words of comfort: “If there is darkness around us, create light! If you lose faith in man, create new faith! If there is sorrow around you, create joy!”
