Gunnar de Frumerie

The CD is rounded off by the Symphonic Variations for Orchestra Op. 25, which is based on the popular Swedish folk song Vårvindar Friska. The Cello Concerto has its origin in a French horn sonata from the end of the 1940s. The sonata was later on transformed into a cello sonata.

The pianist Gunnar de Frumerie was admitted to the State Academy of Music in Stockholm at the early age of 15. In 1945 he began to teach piano there himself and in 1962 he was appointed professor. He composed about 140 works, two-thirds of which contains significant piano parts. He wrote two full-length works for the stage, a ballet, The Night of St. John, and an opera, Singoalla (issued on Caprice), as well as large-scale choral works, organ music, etc.

Tobias Ringborg began a successful career as the winner of the Soloist Prize in 1994. He has performed with all the Swedish symphony and chamber orchestras, and with renowned conductors. He also works as a conductor himself.

Since 1989 cellist Mats Lidström resides in London, where he concertizes, teaches and composes. He has been a solo cellist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.
