Georgian State String Quartet

Shostakovich/Tsintsadze

The Georgian String quartet, isn’t merely the oldest string quartet in the world, it is also considered to be one of the best. On its second Caprice Records CD the ensemble plays string quartets nos. 2 and 3 by Shostakovitch and excerpts from Miniatures for string quartet by Sulkhan Tsintsadze.

Shostakovitch himself has said about the Georgian String quartet: “I have heard the Georgian quartet several times. It consists of extremely good artists, all of whom have a very beautiful and good sound, good technique and a superb capacity for ensemble playing. When listening to them, you involuntarily forget that there are four musicians and start thinking that they are one instrument”.

Four well-qualified professors at the State conservatory in Tbilisi form the quartet: Konstatin Vardell, violin, Tamas Batiashvili, violin, Otar Tchoubinichvili, ‘cello and Nodar Jvania, viola. The quartet has been much in demand in Sweden and has often been on tour here.
