Franz Schubert
The Apollo Ensemble
In 1998 The Swedish Concert Institute asked the pianist Matti Hirvonen to put together a chamber music ensemble for a tour and CD recording. Taking as his motto the battle cry; “Let the next century be the century of chamber music!” he brought together a number of Sweden’s best chamber musicians in a group which named itself The Apollo Ensemble.
This is the first time Swedish musicians dared to record the Trout Quintet, one of the most well-known pieces in the chamber music repertoire. With their untiring energy the ensemble presents an interpretation of the work that is as exquisitely weightless as it is pregnant with force and meaning.
In the Adagio (Notturno), the ensemble is reduced to a trio – violin, cello and piano. The music is like a wrought iron work of art, where clarity and small gestures take on a special significance.
Paula Hoffman Fröling and Matti Hirvonen perform nine Lieder by Schubert. In each new song the interaction between the two musicians develops into a fascinating drama, which is accentuated by Paula’s emotionally expressive interpretation of the poems, where every word becomes meaningful.
