Excerpts from the Nutcracker

Peter Tchaikovsky

The Nutcracker, ballet in two acts, music by Peter Tchaikovsky. Dancing gingerbread men, snowmen, and candy canes share the stage with rats and soldiers in this wholly Swedish version of Tchaikovsky’s ballet with choreography by Pär Isberg. Whimsy ideas and good humor make the Royal Ballet bloom in this wonderful show, the plot of which is based on Elsa Beskow’s well-loved children’s book, Petter and Lotta’s Christmas.

For the Queen’s 60th birthday on December 23rd 2003, while the premiere performance in honor of the Queen of Sweden was taking place, the ballet music from the Nutcracker was released in a special festival package with royal design. The Prince Carl Philip has together with an ad agency produced the graphic design for the CD.

Leif Segerstam conducts the Royal Opera Orchestra, and Caprice has released the CD in collaboration with the Royal Opera. All proceeds from the sale of this CD go the foundation Stiftelsen Silviahemmet. Her Majesty Queen Silvia has started this foundation in which she is also chairman of the board. Silviahemmet carries out education and research in the area of dementia, including day care for those suffering from dementia and education of personnel to care for them.

We hear a children’s choir from the music class at the Adolf Fredrik School in the Waltz of the Snowflakes. The Nutcracker will be sold for a special price at among other places the Royal Opera and in record stores.
