Three Solo Concertos

Sven-David Sandström

Sven-David Sandström, Three solo concertos; Concerto for flute and orchestra, (soloist Tobias Carron), Lonesome, Concerto for guitar and orchestra (soloist Magnus Andersson), Concerto for cello and orchestra (soloist Torleif Thedéen). Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Leif Segerstam.

Since the early 1970’s, Sven-David Sandström (1942-2019) was one of Sweden’s most prolific and controversial composers. His international breakthrough came in the mid-1970’s with the orchestral composition Through and Through. Sandström was a versatile composer, who wrote chamber music, choral compositions, solo works, operas, and a ballet together with Per Jonsson.

This recording of Sandström’s music was made in the Berwald Hall in May 1994. Sandström wrote eight solo concertos for various instruments. Three of them – for flute, guitar and cello respectively – are included on this CD. They differ in terms of forces, style, form and composition technique, as well as the role allotted to the solo instrument. They also have their similarities: the dualistic group of themes in Sandström’s production.
