The High Mass

Sven-David Sandström

Two widely noted concerts took place in Stockholm’s Berwald Hall on 25th and 26th November 1994, with the première performance of Sven-David Sandström’s (1942-2019) The High Mass for three sopranos, two mezzo-sopranos, choir, organ and orchestra, commissioned by the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. The concerts were recorded and are now featured in a double CD release under the joint project between Swedish Radio P2 and Caprice Records.

“Sandström’s The High Mass is on the same symphonic scale as Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and shows the same disposition of movements as Bach’s Mass in B-minor. It is, in other words, a mass composition in the grand tradition, a piece of church music on a level of pretension virtually unknown in the history of Swedish music.”
