Sound Masks

Vytautas V. Jurgutis

This is Caprice Records’ first SACD Hybrid (Super Audio Compact Disc Hybrid)—in surround format. Sound Masks is part of the Swedish-Lithuanian collaboration “Sweden-Lithuania Musical Links” and presents  electroacoustic music by the young Lithuanian composer Vytautas V. Jurgutis.

He is one of Lithuania’s many exciting composers of today, and has in spite of his youth (born 1976) already written, among other things, orchestral, chamber, and choral music. His primary area of composition is however electronic music.

The compositions on Sound Masks were written 2001– 2002, and Jurgutis has been forced to be his own teacher, since there is no Lithuanian tradition to fall back on within the realm of electroacoustic music.

The CD can be played on an ordinary CD player with either 16 or 24 bits resolution. It  is however on a home theatre system with a DVD player able to read 5.1 SACD that the CD really comes into its own! Then one can actually hear how the sound moves across one’s living room, which was earlier something one could only experience in halls that had PA systems with several channels and speakers placed around the room.

This is exciting music with original dynamics involving frequencies higher than 15 kHz—so this is also a great opportunity for those interested in hi-fi to test their systems thoroughly!
