After fierce competition in the Berwald Hall, Mikael Holmlund won the Soloist’s Prize for 2002. The prize included a tour for the Swedish National Concert Agency, 100,000 Swedish crowns in prize money, orchestral engagements, and a CD recording. The jury’s motivation read in part: “for a convincing technical control and sensitive interpretation, marked by versatility and great imagination.
Mikael Holmlund was born in Umeå and began playing the piano at an early age. He also took lessons in organ and bassoon. As a 17-year old, he moved to Oslo and began studies at Norges Musikkhøgskole, where he was awarded the highest honors with his diploma. This was followed by studies at the Conservatory in Hannover.
Now, Mikael lives in Oslo, where he is among other things the cantor at the Swedish Margareta church. He performs often both in Sweden and abroad and has won scholarships and numrous prizes. The Soloist’s Prize is a biennial competition jointly produced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Swedish National Concert Agency, The Royal Opera, and SAMI.
