Karlheinz Stockhausen

Jonny Axelsson & Fredrik Ullén

This CD is a result of two unrelated events: the attempts in 1998 to get Karlheinz Stockhausen to the Electro acoustic Music Festival in the town of Skinnskatteberg, and the collaboration between Jonny Axelsson and Fredrik Ullén on the piece “Kontakte” which started in the middle of the 90s and which culminated in a portrait concert of the composer.

This program later made a critically acclaimed tour of Sweden with the help of Concert Sweden, and was subsequently recorded by Caprice Records.

The music on the CD consists of works central to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s production, and by extension to all modern art music: Zyklus (1959) for percussion, Klavierstücke V (1954 & IX 1961) and Kontakte (1958–60) for percussion, piano and tape.

It feels both important and satisfying to be able to offer the listener this extraordinary music in updated recordings. It is important because there are so few recordings available of these works and satisfying because more people will be able to discover the greatness of the music written by an amazing personality.
