Duke Ellington & Alice Babs

In Sweden 1973

During his last European tour in October 1973, Duke Ellington gave two special concerts in Malmo, Sweden. Several Swedes performed as guest soloists including: vocalist Alice Babs, trumpet player Rolf Ericson, trombone player Åke Persson, and piano player Nils Lindberg.

Ellington was in top form during these concerts – which Alice Babs talks about in her cover text. The solo numbers of the Swedish guests together with Ellington’s orchestra, make up most of this unique CD, which Caprice Records issued in collaboration with Sveriges Radio P2 (Swedish Radio’s station P2) in celebration of Duke Ellington’s 100th birthday in 1999.

This CD also presents the premier of a tune that Ellington gave to Alice Babs a couple of months before this recording.
