Wilhelm Stenhammar

The Song, Two Sentimental Romances, Ithaka

This CD in the Caprice Composer Series mirrors Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927), a composer, pianist and conductor in Gothenburg and Stockholm.

A brilliant pianist himself, he composed only a few works for the instrument. Strings and the human voice were his first love, as witness the few examples brought together for this recording in the Caprice Composer Series; the symphonic cantata Sången (The Song) – a work in two parts of oratorio-like proportions with an orchestral interlude – the two romances for violin and orchestra, and Ithaca, a symphonic poem for orchestra and vocal obbligato.

All compositions are performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra led in order of appearance by Herbert Blomstedt, Stig Westerberg and Kjell Ingebretsen. Vocal soloists in The Song are: Iwa Sörenson, Anne Sofie von Otter, Stefan Dahlberg and Per Arne Wahlgren.
