Pan-Pan

Daniel Karlsson

The winner of the year 2005’s Jazz in Sweden prize is the pianist Daniel Karlsson. He is one of the foremost pianists of the younger generation of Swedish jazz musicians. The CD “Pan-Pan” is the first under his own name.

With him on this record is his hand-picked band: on the trumpet Magnus Broo, saxophonist Per “Texas” Johansson, bass player Christian Spering and the two drummers Jon Fält and Janne Robertson.

Daniel Karlsson has written the music for the band ranging from the meditative and calm to the uncompromisingly fast paced. The tunes all have in common the adventurous, surprising, generous, disquieting, beautiful – but they are also spacious and loose enough for the musicians to be able to make strong personal impressions. Daniel chose two drummers because he wanted a  stronger efect in the rhythm section.

Daniel Karlsson is perhaps best known as one of five players in the group Oddjob, wich has toured throughout Sweden and Europe. He has also been heard together with many other renowned Swedish musicians, including Jeanette Lindström, Rigmor Gustafsson, Victoria Tolstoy, Lisa Nilsson and Svante Thuresson.
