Music from Vietnam 2

Hué

The City of Hûe occupies a special position in Vietnamese musical tradition. The music of this city is known for its beautiful melodies, with a distinctive touch of melancholy.

This music is belived to have originated in the Hindu kingdom of Champa, which dominated the culture of the region in about 1000 A.D. For 150 years, until 1945, Hûe was the focal point of the country, with the imperial court and all that this implied for the cultural life of the city.

This recording features imperial ceremonial music, the seductive, romantic songs of the oarsmen, as they glide along in their sampans, the more ancient traditional music from Hûe, but also the infectiously rhythmic music of the Vietnamese cult of the saints.
