Music from Macedonia 1

Various Artists

Macedonia, this “new” and “unknown” land in the south east of Europe, that encompasses so much tradition and culture, has of course also an incredible treasure-trove of traditional music. Some of the country’s foremost artists, representing many different musical forms and cultures are  assembled on this CD.

The multi-instrumentalist Stefche Stojkovski, the legendary Romany zurla player Muzafer Mahmud are featured, together with the young, hot group named after one of the most important traditional musicians, Pece Atanasoski.

One of the country’s best-known female pop singers, Kaliopi, in a new role, shows that her her heart lies in the tradition; one of the country’s oldest entertainment groups, Ansambl Biljana and two groups, Ensemble Üstref and Stara Veleshka Chalgija, show different aspects of the interesting and exciting “chalgija music,” with definite roots in the Turkish period.
