Johan Borgström
Smile and be serious
The saxophonist Johan Borgström was given the Jazz in Sweden award in 2000, and redorded the CD “Smile and be serious” that same year.
Johan is presently active in Gothenburg, where he moved to continue his studies at the State College of Music. The Gothenburg jazz club Nefertiti has meant a great deal for his development as a musician.
In 1991 Johan Borgström became a permanent member of the group Änglaspel. He also plays in groups such as the Tommy Kotter Group, Calvero and Bohuslän Big Band. Members of his septet formed in the mid-90’s, include Staffan Svensson, trumpet, Niclas Rydh, trombone, Jonas Falke-Blom cello, Tommy Kotter, piano, Stefan Wingefors, bass and Göran Kroon, drums. The members all have an unbiased relationship to music, they are not seeking prestige and they have the driving force to accomplish something new – to be able to communicate freely.
The music on this recording has been composed by Johan Borgström himself. This is his debut CD in his own name. His musical influences are classical music via jazz to the “dance grooves” of the present day. The pieces are presented in a personal and dedicated manner by a septet whose members are indeed representative of young Swedish jazz of today.
