Swedish Jazz History Vol. 1

Among the bands presented in this volume are: Ernst Rolf’s Jazz Band; The Swedish Paramount Orchestra; Helge Lindberg’s Chrystal Band; Håkan von Eichenwald’s Orchestra, as well as some of the earliest examples of the Afro-American influence in Sweden, from the phonograph cylinder at the turn of the century to the ragtime influenced accordion music of Calle Jularbo.

The booklet features an in depth interview with the trumpet player Gösta “Chicken” Törnblad and excerpts from the diary of the drummer Arne Soldén’s diary from the years 1923–1930.

Swedish Jazz History is a quite unique record series that in 10 volumes presents a comprehensive anthology of Swedish jazz music during the period  1899 to 1970. The series is produced by the “jazz archaeologists” Jan Bruér and Bengt Nyquist, who compiled the music, did the background research, and composed the liner notes that presents some in depth interviews with some of the musicians that were active during this period.

The musical material originates from a variety of sources; both  from published and previously unpublished recordings, radio programs and private recordings. The series is produced with research contributions from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and production subsidy from the Swedish Council for Cultural Affairs.
