Swedish Jazz History Vol. 7

The golden years, 1952–55

The early 1950s has been regarded as the golden years of Swedish jazz. The Quincy Jones composition Stockholm Sweetnin’, recorded in 1953, can be seen as a token of the international status of Swedish jazz, when American greats like Clifford Brown and Art Farmer played with leading Swedish soloists.

This seventh volume in the Swedish Jazz History series features some of the most frequently occurring musicians of the period as Åke Persson, Arne Domnérus, Lars Gullin and Bengt Hallberg, who also is featured in an interview about his life as a musician in the booklet. Further, Putte Wickman, Calr-Henrik Norin, Rolf Ericson, Reinhold Svensson, Hacke Björksten, Sonya Hedenbratt, Bils-Bertil Dahlander, Rune Gustafsson, Georg Riedel, Gösta Theselius (as arranger), Malte Johnsson’s and Thore Ehrling’s big bands, some leading provincial orchestras and several new soloists, are featured in this edition.

Swedish Jazz History is a quite unique record series that in 10 volumes presents a comprehensive anthology of Swedish jazz music under the period from 1899 to 1970. The series is produced by the “jazz archaeologists” Jan Bruér and Bengt Nyquist, who compiled the music, did the background research, and composed the liner notes  that presents some in depth interviews with some of the musicians that were active during this period. The musical material comes from a variety of sources; from both published and previously unpublished recordings, radio programmes and private recordings. The series is produced with research contributions from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and production subsidy from the Swedish Council for Cultural Affairs.
