Ärkäk Su

Kurash Sultan

Ärkäk su means powerful water, true water, flow of life…This is the name of the song cycle where Kurash Sultan refers to the Tarim river, the symbol of Uyghur culture and history.

The Uyghurian musician, singer and song writer Kurash Sultan came as a refugee to Sweden 1999. He soon became a renowned artist on the folk and world scene, but he was also busy documenting the Uyghur culture, which in China has a very difficult situation. This project was unfinished when he tragically passed away 2006. Two years later however, his work was donated to the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research. This CD, Ärkäk su presents the researcher, poet, dutar- player and singer Kurash Sultan.

A very informative booklet written by Anders Hammarlund from the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research comes with the CD.
