Henri Marteau

Swedish Pupils & Colleagues

The 7th volume in the historical series Collector’s Classics is an attempt to trace the tradition of Swedish violin playing. Henry Marteau was a French violinist born in Reims 1874. He was the successor of Joseph Joachim at the conservatory in Berlin and was granted Swedish citizenship in 1920 in honor of his invaluable contributions to Swedish musical life.

CD 1 contains unique recordings with Henri Marteau, playing, among other pieces, a complete version of Bach’s E-major partita recorded 1912–13 in Berlin, which after 40 hours of technical restoration sounds impressively natural.

CD 2 and CD 3 are dedicated to Marteau’s Swedish students, chiefly the amazing virtuoso and enthusiast Carl von Garaguly (1900–1984), who later became principal conductor of the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and the legendary Otto Kyndel (1904 – 1983).

CD 3 contains selections of five more Swedish Marteau students: Gerhard Lundquist, Axel Runnquist, Ebba Nissen; and examples of Fritz Ahlberg’s and Sten Bromans chamber work.

CD 4 gives us 26 doors to Marteau, it includes all the important violinists in Sweden in those years: Sven Kjellström, Charles Barkel and Endre Wolf etc. Here we also find a recording of composer Allan Pettersson as a violinist in Tchaikovskys Violin Concerto. The selection is only 58 seconds long,  enough to give his mastery a new perspective.
