Music from Cape Verde

Mornas, Coladeras, Funaná

One of the more interesting regions when world music is concerned is Cape Verde. It has a fascinating musical tradition incorporating elements from Portugal, Brazil and Africa. Its music has gained listeners all over the world.

Here you find yearning and melancholic mornas and rhythmical coladeras, and the authentic fianco, a kind of improvised vocal poetry with strong African roots.

The “living legend” Nacia Gomi share with us her wisdom. The acoustic ten man band Simetiera offers easy going, softly swinging mornas and coladeras, and the blind violinist Augustinho de Pina plays similar music.
