An important objective

How will Sweden's music scene become more equal? Musikverket supports the strategic and long-term gender equality of the music scene on behalf of the government. The Equality contract runs between 2011 and 2014 and involves SEK 8 000 000.

The assignment

The long-term goal of the equality objective is to help men and women become more equally represented in the music scene, with a special emphasis on those genres where the need is greatest.

The gender distribution in the music field still deviates markedly from the ambition of even distribution. The number of female musicians and composers is largely underrepresented in the music scene. This is shown by, amongst others, the analysis that the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet), The Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden) and the Equality Ombudsman reported in January 2009.

The government has therefore commissioned Musikverket to support projects that will lead to greater gender equality within music. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Arts Council, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden) and other stakeholders in the music field.

The Equality support

As part of the gender equality objective Musikverket gives financial support for projects working to increase gender equality in the field of music. All participants within the independent music scene can apply for equality support in relation to strategic and long-term gender equality.

From “Popkollo” for musically interested girls, to research into lost repertoire written by women. The breadth of projects that have so far received support from Musikverket is extensive.

The Equality financial support was given between 2011 and 2014 and is no longer possible to apply for.
