Undoubtedly one of the 20th century’s most famous composers, the Russian Dmitri Shostakovich (1969–1981) was a true musical giant, whose complicated relationship to the Sovjet political power house affected much of both his composing, musical style, and greater circumstances of life. Alternately celebrated and banned in his homeland, but adored throughout the rest of the world for his original and multifaceted tonal language, where both aggressive chaos, meditative tranquillity, and tragic irony are given components, which Shostakovich had the incomparable ability to make approachable for the listener.

Shostakovich wrote in almost all common forms of art music, with several symphonies, operas, solo concertos, and ballets on his resume. But perhaps it’s in his chamber music where the special emotional and philosophical messages of his music are the clearest, distilled even.
